About the Item

Exceptional Large Incised Lacquer Hsun-ok Offering Box With Interior Tray, Bagan, 20th Century.   The large round bowl form is for holding cooked rice and the interior tray is for holding a variety of dishes. A large offering box such as this is what a family would present to a monastery containing a meal for the monks. The circular design has a base of coiled basketry supported by seven boss legs, all covered in several layers of red and black lacquer. The decoration is carved into the surface and colored with green lacquer engraved to the appropriate layer of color. The decoration consists of narrative scenes, each titled in Pali above. The lower base consists of 16 scenes, the upper base 17 scenes, the underside of the tray 7 scenes and the lid with 12 scenes and a figure on a throne on center. The center design on the base and the underside of the tray are of a Binturong. The other decorative bands filling the voids are of a leafy background with the occasional bird or monkey.
