About the Item
Life-size Carved Wood Buddha, possibly by the great 17thC Japanese carver Enku. One of the all-time greats, this piece has all of the qualities of one of his best (look online or at books of his sculpture-there are many). According to one reference book on Enku sculpture, it closely adheres to Buddhas from his late period (1670-1680). Check Christies to see what his sculpture sells for at auction. I can make no guarantees, as it has to not been authenticated.
There is a distinctive quality to his sculpture that is very clear and a parent. After viewing several dozen of his sculptures, It was impossible to ignore. As he supposedly Carved up to 100,000 images during his lifetime, there are certainly enough examples out there to look at. There seem to be very few in the west however. I have only found the one at Christie's that has sold at auction in recent years.
