About the Item
This sage green carved stone Buddha was purchased from an upstate NY garden where it has resided for the last 120 years. The family began the house and garden in the late 1890s and traveled through China, Southeast Asia and Europe acquiring objects to create a complete retirement home for themselves and their family from New York City. Sculptures like this are a typical form found at Angkor of numerous sizes representing Nagas and used as guardians of temples. This figure was a favorite motif of Angkorean sculptors from the 12 century on through to the present time. Shown is the Buddha sitting in a posture of meditation. His weight is supported by the coils of a naga or snake that has used its flared hood to shield the Buddha from above. This motif recalls the story of the Buddha and his encounter with the serpent king Mucalinda during the first week after his enlightenment. While the Buddha sat beneath a tree engrossed in meditation Mucalinda came up from the roots of the tree to shield the Buddha from a sudden severe storm that was forming. The serpent king keeps the Buddha warm and dry for seven days the duration of the storm. After the storm finally passed the great snake turned into a young man who paid respect to the Buddha. The carving is crisp and clean with a great deal of detail and Buddhistic representation. The statue has the long ears associated with Cambodian and Thai Buddhas and the figure was purchased by the family legend in the last years of the 1890s but might even be older than that but we can only assert it to be late 19th or early 20th century. The figure was damaged during a storm when a tree branch fell and it has an old repair to the neck but it is a repair done with a professional hand and has lasted for over 50 years in its current condition. The sculpture retains much of its surface patina from its years of exposure to the elements and still shows lichen and tendril attachments from vining creepers. While the figure is shown without a pedestal we have for an additional fee a very nice custom made interior pedestal crafted from walnut that we can offer if a customer is interested.Condition Disclosure:

19th Century Tibetan Patinated Bronze Figure of Tara on New Black Base
Located in Hudson, NY
This fine old bronze of Tara was made for the purpose of focusing on the process of meditation regarding her aspects of wisdom and compassion. Crafted in Tibet but nearer to India and its influences this figure is an interesting combination of Hindu and Buddhist art and religion. Originally Tara was conceived as a Hindu mother goddess with the spread of Buddhism she was redesigned sometime after 4th century giving her a new role within the spreading Buddhist religion. This seems to have taken place in Shri Lanka and then spread out and back into India and Tibet thru China. At this time Shri Lanka was a great trading center and was host to many religious aspects, sects and ideals. The figure is cast with many fine details and is patinated in a warm green, brown showing traces of a coppery red color. The bronze content of this figure has a high amount of copper in the smelting giving the bronze a rich internal red color. Seated in lalitasana with her pendent right foot resting on a separately cast Padma or lotus pillow...

Dauhun porcelain is a type of true white wares made in Dehua in Fujian Province. This first appeared in the late Song Dynasty in small amounts but reached its greatest achievements in the Ming Dynasty.
