Monumental Bronze Khmer-Style Figure of Avalokiteshvara

About the Item

This tall and dramatic figure is finely cast and represents the best in Khmer bronze casting from Cambodia and Northeast Thailand. Associated with Hindu and Buddist worship and royal cult practices, this figure of the Bodhisattva is most likely a devotional casting commissioned by the ascetic group, the Sri Canasa, as evidenced by very similar figures in several important collections centered in the simple treatment of the clothing and the shape of the eyes and mouth. This blending of Hindu and Buddist deities relates to the spread thru Southeast Asia of a global spiritualization despite theological differences. Regional and national forms here have grafted onto original ideals creating a unique singular manifestation. Avalokiteshvara is the highest level of Bodhisattva dedicated to helping all sentient beings. The stylistic range of these statues depicting this self-sacrificing figure is very wide-ranging even within the borders of a single country. The work we believe was cast approximately 1790 but can have been done into the 19th century, has an excellent patina and rests on a wooden base but would originally have had a cast bronze base it was attached to in the past. The figure is cast holding in its four arms different implements including mala beads and a fly whisk. The face and features are cast with a benevolent expression. The lips and eyes are intensely expressive and the ear lobs stretch down and add grace and exotic charm. The hair is drawn up tight in a chignon and secured in a foliate crown centered on an image of a deity at rest while the body is wearing a short dohit featuring a split hem held with a simple belt. This fine old bronze of Tara was made for the purpose of focusing on the process of meditation regarding her aspects of wisdom and compassion.
