About the Item
Netsuke in natural persimmon wood in the form of a stylized bird (probably a sparrow), it has been treated with abstraction and has a remarkable polish.
In Asia, the sparrow is seen as a messenger from the ancestors, bringing news from the outer world. In Chinese folklore especially sparrows are important because they are thought to symbolize joy and happiness. In Buddhism, sparrows are often seen as a reference to spiritual liberty and the simple life of the monks. It reminds of the importance of liberating yourself from the material world in order to attain inner peace. These birds are also associated with the arrival of spring and represent hope and good fortune. Sparrows are considered messengers of love and affection , and their chirping are thought to bring luck and prosperity. They are considered devoted and protective creatures, always watching on one another. The resilience and adaptability of the sparrow in harsh environment also makes it a good symbol of perseverance and tenacity. The sparrow by its discreet but yet constant presence reminds to anyone the importance of the happiness within each day and the necessity of valorizing that joy.
