About the Item

A Whimsical Pair of Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Horses on Patinated Bronze Bases with Removable Saddles This pair of cloisonné enamel horses is modeled in an animated stance, each figure stepping forward over sculpted cloud-form bases rendered in patinated bronze. The bodies display a turquoise-ground surface filled with scrolling foliate patterns in contrasting enamel colors, accented with red roundels and outlined in gilt. The manes and tails are cast separately in gilt metal with a textured surface. Each horse is fitted with a removable saddle component, shaped as a raised platform with a curved underside and decorated in matching cloisonné panels. These saddles lift off cleanly, revealing the recessed opening fitted into the top of each figure. Cloisonné is produced by applying thin metal wires to form small cells, which are filled with colored enamels and fired to create a glassy, polished surface. This technique has been used in China since the Ming dynasty and became associated with decorative objects created for imperial and temple settings. The swirling scrollwork and cloud motifs seen across the bodies of the horses reflect long-established decorative themes linked with prosperity, protection, and auspicious energy. The combination of full cloisonné bodies, gilt detailing, and separately constructed saddles gives this pair a rare structural complexity. The bright turquoise palette, along with the contrasting red and pale blue enamels, indicates a later twentieth-century production period when workshops revisited earlier Qing-style forms with refined enamel work and bold coloration. The removable saddles are an uncommon feature that allows the pair to be displayed either fully assembled or in an alternative configuration, adding functional flexibility for interior presentation. The patinated bases beneath each horse are cast with geometric borders and low-relief panels, creating a firm support that enhances the presence of the figures. Together, the horses present a balanced complementary pair, each turned slightly inward to create a symmetrical display. Their scale, detailed enamel surfaces, and well-preserved condition make them suitable as a decorative focal point in a wide range of settings.

A Pair of Chinese Cloisonne Turquoise Blue Ground Vases w/ Taotie Masks
Located in New York, NY
A pair of Chinese cloisonné enamel vases with turquoise blue ground and taotie mask decoration, early 20th century. The vases are constructed in baluster form with wide flared rims and feature characteristic cloisonné work with multicolored enamels set within gilt copper wires. The decoration is applied over a bronze body, visible at the rims and foot rings, consistent with cloisonné. Each vase is decorated in horizontal registers centered around bands of large taotie masks in multicolored enamel, rendered in symmetrical profiles and outlined in copper cloisons. These taotie motifs alternate in color, including deep red, cobalt blue, olive green, and purple tones. The central band is bordered by narrower friezes of ruyi-heads, leiwen (thunder) patterns, stylized floral elements, and eye motifs framed by archaistic triangular lappets. Around the shoulders, a chevron band of lanceolate leaf motifs with white floral emblems is set above additional stylized animal mask motifs featuring eyes and horns. The flared necks are further decorated with mirrored scrollwork and smaller taotie devices on a turquoise leiwen ground, terminating in a ruyi band along the interior and exterior of the rim. These vases are representative of late Qing cloisonné production, which emphasized large-format vessels with elaborate archaistic ornamentation inspired by Shang and Zhou bronze...
