Pair of Articulated Paper Mache Bunraku Puppet Legs, Japanese, Meiji period
This pair of Meiji period Bunraku paper mache legs are a rare and intriguing piece of art. Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded in Osaka in the beginning of the 17th century, which is still performed in the modern day. These legs are articulated at the knee and feature Japanese writing on the thighs (possible a label of the puppet to which they belong) and comes with a bespoke steel stand. Handmade stand included so it is ready to display right out of the package.
