This pair of vertical Chinese signs, dating to the early 20th century, is richly decorated with bold hand-carved calligraphy. Each panel is crafted from wood and finished in a warm lacquered ground, accented with scattered gilt flecks that bring a lively surface detail. The inscriptions, carved in relief and painted in deep black, stand out with striking clarity against the reddish-brown background, their strong brush-inspired forms embodying both artistry and tradition.
The right panel reads “Good Family” (良好家庭), a wish for domestic happiness, while the left reads “A World of Great Harmony” (大同世界), a phrase expressing ideals of peace and unity. Together, the two signs would have served as auspicious household panels, embodying blessings for prosperity and harmony.
Original iron fittings remain in place, allowing the pair to be hung as intended. Measuring over 57 inches in height (59.25 inches including hardware), their elongated proportions give them a striking presence, whether flanking a doorway, mounted on a wall, or incorporated into a decorative ensemble.
