About the Item
A fun and colorful pair of vintage Chinese famille jaune glazed porcelain tall (15") foo dogs or foo lions, Chinese export, early to mid 20th century, China.
The delightful pair of dogs or lions are portrayed raised upon a tall plinth and seated upright upon their haunches, their heads turned to face the viewer, with one paw raised slightly. The male holds a pierced brocade ball under his raised paw, while the female wrangles an unruly cub under hers.
The lions have wonderfully friendly and earnest faces. Their mouths are open to show off toothy grins and lolling tongues. They have flattened noses and bulging eyes. A series of "snail shell" curls (reminiscent of the Buddha's distinctive hair) adorn the top of the head and neck. The lions also wear jaunty collars set with a tassels and a bell, and tied with a ribbon to the back.
Crafted in porcelain, the lions are glazed in the famille jaune palette, with bodies and heads glazed bright yellow, hair and attributes glazed green, and tails and plinths glazed an ochre brown.
