About the Item
Well-loved and richly worn, this petite bronze traveling shrine depicts the Hindu god Ganesha. Attributed to 17th/18th century Nepal, the palm-sized icon is sculpted of bronze and finished with bright orange pigments, now lightly burnished at the high points from years of use.
Easily identified by his elephant head, Ganesha is a widely worshipped deity believed to grant success, prosperity and protection against adversity. Invoked at the beginning of prayers, important undertakings, and religious ceremonies, he is the god of new beginnings and bringer of good luck.
In this small shrine, Ganesha is depicted in seated in meditation before a fiery nimbus, wearing a headdress and simple robes. In keeping with ancient statuary, he is shown with four arms, the front-left holding a delicacy to eat with his trunk, the front-right holding his own broken tusk, the back-left holding a pasha (lasso) - a weapon used to remove obstacles - and the back-right held in the vitarka mudra of teaching and debate.
