Stone Buddha from the Edo Period in Niigata Prefecture, Japan / 17-19th Century

About the Item

This is a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva that was mainly placed in places around Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. (The red circle on the map is Sado Island.) Sado Island is a unique region that has cultivated a distinctive history and culture within Japan. Today, the cultural value of Sado Island's gold mines has led to their registration as a World Heritage Site, attracting much attention in recent years. From the Middle Ages to the early modern period, it was known as a place of exile, and during the Edo period, many people gathered there with the development of gold and silver mines, and a culture of faith and prayer took root. Among these, such stone statues have been extensively created across the island since the Edo period. These small Buddha statues, dedicated to shrines and temples in hopes of the recovery of sick children and household safety, still quietly stand throughout the island. I will attach a photo of the stone Buddha on Sado Island to the photo. This work depicts Jizo Bosatsu, a bodhisattva deeply revered by the common people as a savior from the sufferings of this world, characterized by his appearance as a monk. His bald, round head and quiet, robed figure bring a sense of peace to the hearts of those who see him. The material used is granite, which has been weathered by wind and rain to create a unique expression of wabi-sabi. The traces of weathering carved by the passage of time create a depth that can only be found in objects that have stood the test of time, and the more you look at it, the more your heart calms down and your emotions slowly settle. This work is slightly larger than the other stone Buddha statues we have introduced so far, giving it a solid presence in terms of size. It stands 36.6 cm tall, fitting comfortably into the line of sight when placed indoors, gently transforming the atmosphere of the entire space. Placed quietly by a window where natural light streams in, in a tokonoma, or on a shelf, its presence blends seamlessly into the space as if it had been there for years, quietly accompanying daily life. Additionally, when placed outdoors in a garden or entranceway, the texture of the stone changes with the seasons, allowing you to enjoy a dialogue with nature throughout the year. I hope that more people will have the opportunity to experience these antique and folk religious artifacts, so I have kept the price as low as possible.
