About the Item
This wooden coconut grater (khood maprow) from the early 20th century is carved in the form of a crouching boy, a variation on the typical "crouching rabbit" design. Large enough to double as a low seat, the sculptural tool would have been placed before a shallow bowl and used to scrape the meat from coconuts into coconut milk and fine, snow-like flakes for use in dumplings, sauces and sweetmeats.
