About the Item

This standing Buddha figure from Thailand wears a serene expression of stillness and calm. Cast of bronze alloy in the Ayutthaya style, the Buddha is draped in bejeweled robes reminiscent of Thai royal attire, embellished with filigree decoration and inlaid glass beads. A turban-like "crown" surmounts his ornate headdress, a physical representation of the Buddha's enlightenment known as an ushnisha. With eyes downcast in quiet meditation, the Buddha holds his right hand outwards in the abhaya mudra, or pang lila, a gesture of protection and fearlessness known in Thailand as "Calming the Waters."
