About the Item
The lack of pockets on traditional Japanese kimonos resulted in small pouches or boxes that were strung at the waist and secured by button-like fasteners known as netsuke. Although these tiny, fob-like objects had a practical purpose, they were exquisitely crafted of a wide range of materials and became fashionable as treasured accessories.
This petite Japanese netsuke is carved of wood with a design of three rats clambering over a bell. Rats are considered symbols of luck and prosperity, and a placard on the front is carved with the fú (福) character for good fortune.
