This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of an outer space nightscape suggests our universe of countless moons and stars and might remind us of a similar and unique evening experience in our lives. The powerful and colorful depiction is executed in natural dark green- almost black, cream and yellow (limonite mineral) colors. This is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone.
This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve.
This thin marble stone "painting" is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868)
Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West.

A crowned style that displays Northern Thai iconography merged with the aesthetic of Burmese rule in the region. The figure is depicted in the popular Theravada seated position of padmasana, (interlocking legs position) and the hand mudra in bhumisparsa (earth touching) wherein the feet are souls up, the fingers of the right hand extend beyond the right shin and the left hand palm up resting above the lap. Remnants of the leaf-like kirita crown remain. The image is dressed in Burmese royal costume with thayo rolled lacquer relief decoration modeled into cuffs, epaulettes, knee pads and a detailed “U” shaped necklace covering the chest. There is also a lappet of clothing between the legs draping down toward the base. The figure is seated upon a tall and waisted throne pedestal having rows of lotus petal grooves on the diagonal portions . The base and body are carved from one solid piece of hard wood. All covered in black lacquer with thayo lacquer details, red pigment for the lips and gold leaf overall.
The Jambupati style Buddha illustrates the tale of the Buddha’s life when he came across the arrogant King Jambupati, a king who terrorized his subjects and who lacked humility and compassion for his people. The Buddha on meeting the King asked that he forsake his evil ways and instead practice kindness to his fellow man. Ignoring the Buddha’s request, the King continued to terrorize the people. The Buddha then in his efforts to change the King of his evil ways, one day magically appeared to him in resplendent royal attire. King Jambupati was in awe of the Buddha’s appearance prostrated himself in obeisance and from that day onward accepted the Buddhist precepts. In Southeast Asian countries like Burma, where rulers have very high if not semi-divine status, tales of this type, reinforced the need for the leader to worship the Buddha, the King of Kings.
Condition: Heavy deterioration of the underside of the base as well as the interior portion of the crown, other losses include crown flanges, the crown spire, earrings, the tip of the left thumb, one base corner edge, rolled lacquer losses and general wear of the gold leaf surface, all commensurate with age and wear.
Measuring: 22.25 in. high x 8.75 in. wide x 7.75 in. deep(56.5cm x 22.2cm x 29.7cm).

Carved from a single block of buff sandstone, the stele features a Jain family group comprised of a father, mother, and two children. The family group is portrayed upon a lotus pedestal under a tall palm tree. The mother and father both seated in a relaxed pose known as lalitasana, or royal ease pose, a jovial expression on their faces. The mother holds the daughter in her lap. The younger son scampers mischievously up the trunk of the palm tree, his head turned to look back at his parents.

It was purchased by a Private Dallas collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 24th September 2004. Sale Number 8008, Lot No. 28.
Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
The sculpture was described as: "Carved in relief with Vishnu in his boar incarnation stepping forward from the ocean, his left foot placed upon a lotus, two nagas beneath with their hands clasped in devotion. Vishnu’s primary right hand rests on his thigh in katihasta mudra while his remaining hands carry his attributes of mace, conch and discus. A diminutive figure of the earth Goddess, Bhudevi, whom Vishnu has rescued from the primeval waters, is balanced on his left elbow. The figure is bejeweled, wearing a broad, beaded waistband and necklaces and is placed within a niche between two pillars.
Measure: Height 27 in. (68.6 cm.),
circa 10th century.
