About the Item

An Antique 19th Century Russian Uzbek Five-Color Pure Silk Wrapped Tribal Weaving Ikat, with Its Original Russian Roller-Printed Cotton Backing. The front displays a highly detailed pattern characterized by elongated vertical motifs composed of symmetrical, flame-like shapes. The design features a five-color composition of deep purple, pinkish-red, yellow, white, and small accents of blue, arranged in continuous mirrored sequences. The silk surface shows a tight weave structure with crisp, well-preserved dye transitions, indicating its traditional resist-dyeing technique typical of Uzbek ikats. The patterning is arranged in vertical alignments with interlocking motifs of abstract floral and vine-like forms that extend rhythmically across the field. The reverse side retains the original Russian roller-printed cotton lining, divided into multiple floral panels, each presenting a distinct design and color scheme. The dominant background tones of burgundy and rust red are overlaid with printed floral sprays in rose, cream, green, and light blue hues. The edges are bordered with alternating bands of small-scale orange and white foliate prints and an outer green silk border, framing the composition and securing the lining. The floral prints display a mix of large-scale blossoms and trailing stems, typical of Russian export cottons of the 19th century, which were often used as trade fabrics in Central Asia. In fantastic condition for its age, the textile maintains vibrant color saturation and structural integrity throughout both the silk ikat and the cotton backing. The preservation of both layers is particularly noteworthy, as many similar examples have suffered from fading or separation. This example represents the fusion of Central Asian weaving artistry and Russian textile production, with the silk ikat on the front and roller-printed cotton on the reverse remaining together as originally constructed. Uzbekistan, Russia, circa 1880.
