About the Item

This 19th-century embroidered fan case once belonged to a well-to-do lady of the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911), a must-have accessory that kept her paper fan close to hand. The delicate case is crafted of paper and cotton mesh, decorated with needlepoint embroidery of blossoming flowers and butterflies. A popular motif for weddings and ladies' clothing, this design of butterflies amongst flowers symbolizes joy, love and good fortune. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer. Fan case is fragile and should be handled with care. Some losses to embroidery.
