About the Item
This 19th-century embroidered fan case once belonged to a well-to-do lady of the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911), a must-have accessory that kept her paper fan close to hand. The delicate case is crafted of paper and cotton mesh, decorated with needlepoint embroidery of blossoming flowers and butterflies. A popular motif for weddings and ladies' clothing, this design of butterflies amongst flowers symbolizes joy, love and good fortune.
