About the Item

A vibrant and rare example of early 20th-century Japanese textile art, this mid-length Haori jacket dates to the Taisho Period. It captures the era’s celebrated "Taisho Roman" style—a movement known for its dramatic scale, daring color combinations, and expressive floral motifs. The garment is crafted from a rich, textured Rinzu (silk damask), featuring a subtle tonal geometric weave that adds a sophisticated luster to the background. The piece is dominated by magnificent, sprawling Botan (Peonies). Known in Japan as the "King of Flowers," the peony is a symbol of nobility, feminine beauty, and prosperity. The flowers are rendered in a striking deep teal with fine linework, contrasted against a brilliant vermilion ground and ivory foliage. The composition is balanced yet dynamic, designed to create a continuous visual flow when worn or displayed. Hand-dyed silk with intricate graphic detailing. Features a decorative silk lining (typical of high-end Haori) with a subtle abstract pattern and original pink Haori-himo (braided silk ties). This piece is highly collectible as a textile artwork for wall-mounting, yet remains perfectly wearable as a statement evening jacket.
