Japanese Embroidery Textile Panel Winter Lanscape

About the Item

A Japanese silk embroidery landscape scenery panel depicting a temple compound set in a wintery forest among snow-covered towering pines. The compound is centered around a group of pavilions stilted on the edge of a pond. More buildings were seen in the further background and hidden high in the misty hill. Large pine trees and branches in the foreground as well as the reeds and rocks in the pond, clearly show a fresh layer of snow. Very dimensional and realistic in ambience, this type of pictorial panels was made mostly in the early 20th century (1910-20s) toward the end of Meiji and beginning of Taisho period. At the time, Japan experienced an unprecedented opening to the west and a flux of commercial, cultural and artistic exchange. By participating many international expos in the west, it introduced its art to the west and kicked up the crazed Japonisme trend and impact on the trajectory of western art. At the same time, western aesthetic and perspective on art influenced Japanese art made around that time as well. This silk panel was such an example. Completely Japanese in embroidery techniques and subject matter, it was crafted in the tradition of a western landscape oil painting, obviously targeting to the export market for the western taste. The embroidered panel was displayed as a wall tapestry in an American home for decades. While the central pictorial part is surprisingly well preserved, the more delicate blue brocade border has largely disintegrated. It will take the potential buyer to frame the piece mindfully to preserve part of the inner border. The embroidered panel is 35" w x 50" h. With full borders, it measures 45" w x 60" h. A frame that is 37" w by 52" h will showcase the piece very well with about 2 inches of intact border showing if one chooses so. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The embroidered panel is in good condition with scattered area of loose threads. The brocade border is largely degraded toward the outer edges. Unframed but it can be nicely framed with part of the intact brocade border shown as in the first picture.
