About the Item
This is an ancient Japanese indigo-dyed cloth produced between the end of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Three thin, evenly spaced yellowish lines create a regular rhythm on a deep indigo background. The vertical stripes are sophisticated even from a modern perspective, making it a rare design that combines tradition with a modern sensibility.
Indigo dyeing is a dyeing technique deeply rooted in Japanese life, and the resulting blue, also known as "Japan Blue," exudes a timeless allure. This piece was a fixture in the lives of ordinary people, and it is unclear whether it was used as a furoshiki wrapping cloth or folded and stuffed with cotton for a futon. However, holes were repaired with cloth, and the cloth bears the mark of careful use in daily life. In Japan, fully repaired cloth is called "boro," and in recent years it has received international acclaim as a crystallization of everyday wisdom and aesthetic sense. While this cloth has relatively few repairs and is not completely ripped, the contrast between the indigo and the stripes remains beautiful, giving it an exceptional presence as a tapestry.
Simply hang it on the wall and it will blend in with both traditional Japanese and modern interiors. The soft texture of natural materials and the aged look of the fabric will add depth and warmth to any space. It's attached to a bamboo pole with a safety pin, as shown in the display photo, so it's ready to hang on the wall. This item comes with a bamboo pole. If you don't need the pole, we can ship the fabric alone.
This is a rare antique textile that combines design and practicality. We're proud to present this exceptional piece, sourced from northern Kanto.

We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.
