About the Item
This striking “shichou-maku,” or paper curtain, dates to the Meiji period and was originally used in sericulture rooms to shield silkworms from drafts and cold air. Hung from ceiling to floor, it served as both a thermal and insect-repellent barrier.
Made from layers of recycled washi paper, its surface was repeatedly coated with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) to strengthen the material and enhance its durability. Over time, this process created a richly textured, weathered patina with soft, abstract tones that evoke the quiet power of contemporary minimalism.
Despite its age, the piece is lightweight and versatile—ideal as a wall hanging, sculptural textile, or as part of a larger installation. The paper structure allows for playful spatial reconfiguration. The irregular creases and natural pigments give it both a tactile presence and a poetic sense of time.
Flexible in Use:
• Display as a standalone art object or frame sections as minimalist panels
• Incorporate into wabi-sabi interiors or installation art
• Combine with raw wood, ceramic, or metal for subtle contrast
