About the Item
A rare, unusually large (11'2" x 6'2") and finely woven late 19th or very early 20th-century Chinese silk rug featuring a powerful dragon motif. Rendered in luminous silk, the composition contrasts vibrant, saturated colors against a restrained ground to heighten the visual impact. At the center, a gracefully arching dragon in vivid red commands attention, its dynamic form set against a darker field and encircled by swirling blue clouds that symbolize its celestial ascent.
The animated interior is framed by a structured border that provides a deliberate counterpoint to the fluid movement within, lending balance and visual depth to the design.
Dragon-decorated Chinese silk rugs are highly prized for their imperial symbolism. Traditionally associated with authority, prosperity, and good fortune, such works often reference courtly imagery through auspicious colors and celestial motifs. This example reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and cultural significance that characterize the finest Chinese silk carpets of the period.
