About the Item

A stately mid-19th-century Uzbek man’s chapan woven in a rich plum-purple silk brocade highlighted with large-scale golden damask motifs. This distinctive textile pattern, executed in metallic-toned silk threads, reflects the opulent outerwear favored by urban Central Asian elites during this period. The robe features tailored shoulders, a flared body, and long sleeves typical of Bukharan men’s garments of the time. It is finished along the front opening and cuffs with its original handwoven cotton trim. The interior is lined with a solid green silk, providing a smooth structure and complementing the vibrancy of the brocade exterior. The garment shows light wear consistent with age but retains excellent overall condition with no restorations or later modifications. Dimensions: Length (Neck to Hem): 136 cm (53.5 in) Width (Sleeve to Sleeve): 184 cm (72.4 in) The mounting service — which involves hand-stitching the robe onto a linen support for preservation — will be provided at no additional cost. Final framing can be arranged by the buyer with a local framer according to their preferred style and materials. This option is recommended for long-term preservation and display, though the robe remains fully wearable if preferred.
