About the Item

A graceful and highly feminine example of mid-20th century Japanese formal wear, this Furisode kimono is crafted from exceptionally soft, high-drapery silk. The garment features a vibrant Coral-Persimmon ground, adorned with a delicate "scattering" composition of Shikishi (traditional square cards used for poetry) and seasonal botanical sprays. The design showcases a beautiful array of Plum Blossoms (Ume), representing resilience and the start of spring, alongside Chrysanthemums (Kiku), the national flower of Japan symbolizing longevity and imperial beauty. The inclusion of the poem cards adds a literary and scholarly depth to the piece, suggesting a refined elegance. The background silk features a subtle mon-rinzu (figured satin) weave with a recurring floral pattern that catches the light with movement. This Furisode is in excellent vintage condition. Because of its long, dramatic sleeves and floor-length sweep, it makes an extraordinary statement piece for interior decor when displayed on a traditional Iko (kimono stand), though it remains perfectly suitable for formal styling.
