About the Item

This extraordinary 16-foot Chinese embroidered silk mural dates to the 19th century and exemplifies the richness of Qing dynasty court-style textile production. Executed in silk thread on a luminous copper-colored silk ground, the panoramic composition depicts the Emperor in a fantastical landscape populated by Daoist immortals, attendants, auspicious flora, birds, and mythical creatures—imagery associated with longevity, harmony, and imperial authority. The scale, horizontal format, and narrative density indicate the textile was originally conceived as an architectural wall hanging or palace interior frieze, later adapted with a border. The embroidery displays refined shading, animated figural movement, and layered symbolism characteristic of high-level court or court-adjacent workshops. Provenance: From the personal collection of Iris Apfel, whose celebrated eye for global textiles and bold, theatrical interiors makes this mural a quintessential example of her design sensibility. Attribution: Attributed to a Qing dynasty imperial or court-adjacent embroidery workshop. Dimensions: Approx. 24 in. H × 200 in. L (including later-added border) Condition: Fair, consistent with age and scale. Folded top edge forming a later hem; tears, loose threads, small losses, and tattered border. Decorative impact remains powerful.
