About the Item

This beautiful and very rare early example of Japanese Nabeshima (Ako) Dantsu represents one of the most distinctive traditions within Japan’s textile and carpet-making heritage. Woven entirely from cotton, this carpet exemplifies the subtle elegance, softness, and durability for which Dantsu carpets are celebrated, particularly their suitability for Japan’s humid climate. Little known outside Japan, Dantsu carpets were historically reserved for the elite—samurai lords, feudal rulers, and affluent merchants. Traditionally produced in dimensions corresponding to tatami mats, they were displayed in prized tea rooms, reception halls, and formal interiors. Their restrained patterns and refined textures reflect the aesthetic values of the Japanese elite. Nabeshima Dantsu originated after decades of experimentation by a pioneering woman artisan inspired by the beauty of Chinese textiles. After nearly thirty years of refinement, the resulting carpets attracted the attention of Emperor Meiji, and production eventually expanded to overseas markets. Today, early examples such as this are highly sought after for their rarity and cultural significance. The carpet remains in very good overall condition and can be used as intended. Minor stains and signs of use are present, consistent with age and careful handling. Dimensions: 190 × 91 cm (74.7 × 35.8 in) Approximate thickness: 1.5 cm (0.6 in) Weight: 3.3 kg (7.3 lb) Condition: Very good, with minor staining consistent with age and use. ⸻ International Buyers — Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs.
