This mid-20th century ikat textile from Timor Island, Indonesia is a striking example of traditional Indonesian weaving, created in a tubular form and originally worn as a waist coat (sarong-style garment). Handwoven using the ikat resist-dye technique, the textile features a rich indigo ground animated by rhythmic geometric motifs, their softly blurred edges bearing witness to the handmade process.
Bands of intricate patterning run horizontally across the cloth, punctuated by areas of delicate hand embroidery that add texture, depth, and a subtle relief to the surface.
