About the Item

Both slippers are profusely hand embroidered with gold silver threads on silk, the toes featuring seed pearls arranged in anthemia motifs, the beds showing hand stitched ‘Tree of Life’ motifs in silver gold threads against an abraded foundation of purple, indigo vermillion stitched fabric. Their undersides showing hourglass shaped, spatulate leather soles. Given the abundant use of gold silver threads and seed pearls, these were quite obviously made for a woman of very high standing, quite possibly a member of the Royal family. Ref: A relatively similar pair of 18th / 19th century Ottoman slippers, albeit in a better state of preservation, were recently offered in an ‘Arts of the Islamic World India’ at Sotheby’s in London on October 25th, 2025, Lot number 152, with an estimate of £6000-£8000 (realizing £10,795 British Pounds).

Pair of Chinese Silk Lotus Slippers, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
These dainty, pointed slippers, made of blue silk and embroidered with pink flowers, were shaped to resemble a lotus bud and enhanced the diminutive shape of bound feet. A practice that began in the Tang dynasty and reached the height of its popularity in the Qing dynasty, foot binding was a painful process intended to make a woman's feet as small as possible by restricting bone growth from an early age. The smaller the feet the more attractive and erotic they were, giving elite women a mark of elegance and a distinctive - albeit tortured - gait of small, light steps. These embroidered silk lotus slippers...
