Store closing March 31. Last chance clearance sale. Provenance: This necklace was formerly in the collection of Ivory Freidus—a well-known art collector from New York (now deceased). In 1989 she was credited by the Oriental Rug Review as having one of the “most significant collections of Himalayan art in the US if not the world”. She acquired this necklace on one of her many trips to the Himalayas. The necklace was published in the first edition of The History of Beads (Lois Sherr Dubin, 1987), as Plate 210, p. 208, and in foreign and subsequent editions. The very good full-page photograph used in the publications does not prepare one for the actual immense size of the beads and the necklace construction. Total length 3 1/2 feet (42 inches / 106.25 cm). Given the provenance, and that it is strung on white yak string, it is probable that the necklace is probably in its original arrangement, worn by a prosperous Ladakhi man or woman. The design is formal and balanced, but not symmetrical. Both the Mingei Museum in San Diego and the Rubin Museum in New York have expressed interest in adding this to their permanent collection. A detailed description and additional images can be obtained by contacting the seller. There is a total of fifty-one (51) beads in the primary necklace. It also includes a silver-colored closure, two elaborate side strands; and two short silver chains flanking the three central beads that were used to hook the necklace to the wearer’s clothing or to each other to keep the heavy necklace from swinging about too much. The beads and other elements consist of these materials: chank shell, coral, turquoise, agate and dzi beads, simulated amber, aventurine glass, seed pearls, a small tusk, and silver mounts, caps, implements, and ornaments.
