About the Item
Traditional Silk Shaman’s Shoulder Cloth, Tai Daeng, Houaphanh Province, Laos. This is a man/woman healing cloth or shaman’s shawl, so named as the center section is plain weave (all brown), and the ends, while woven with the same pattern, have different colors to represent each gender; the cornflower blue side is male, and the multicolored side is female. A rich traditional hand spun and woven silk with superfine supplementary weft weaving. A geometric motif beautifully interwoven to create a dense pattern at either end of the textile, each with a center diamond eye as a portal to the ancestor world. The number of colors used in the composition directly impacts the complexity of the mechanics of weaving. The more colors used the longer it takes to weave. In this elegant textile more than four colors are used, all on a dark brown background. The borders of the end designs incorporate the naga (mythological river serpents) as well as other geometric and floral motifs.
