Vintage Indonesian Geometric Ikat Textile Rug, 20th Century
Ikat is an Indonesian word that refers to a highly challenging technique, where colorful often abstract designs are achieved by intricately weaving patterns with selectively pre-dyed strands. These cotton Ikats, woven probably somewhere in the Lesser Sunda Islands in eastern Indonesia, perhaps the island of Sumba, depict not only abstract geometric designs but clearly drawn animals and even homes and trees. While created in the Mid-20th Century, they represent a continuation of a local tradition that has been preserved from a far older time, highlighting the difficulty of mastering this intricate craft.
