Pair of Wrought-Iron “Buckle” Andirons, 19th Century
Forged from solid iron, these fireplace andirons feature sturdy billet bars terminating in tight scroll feet and uprights pierced by squared “buckle” frames—an ingenious blacksmith’s flourish that lends both strength and graphic appeal. The scrolling crest at the top of each standard once served to secure spit rods or fireplace tools, while the integral feet raise logs off the hearth for efficient draft. With their bold buckle motif, they cheekily recall the iconic footwear of early American Pilgrims—perfect for imagining a hearty roast turning on the spit after a long day in the New World. Surfaces show the pleasing scale, hammer striations, and dark graphite-gray patina expected of well-cared-for 19th-century hearth iron. A handsome, functional pair ready for modern wood-burning or decorative installation. Dimensions (each): 14 ¾ in H × 7 ½ in W × 16 in D (≈ 37 × 19 × 41 cm).
