About the Item

This rare and visually striking pair of cast iron owl andirons dates to circa 1900 and originates from the United States. Cast in an unusually tall and slender form, each andiron depicts a stylized owl perched on a branch, with crisply defined plumage and large yellow glass eyes that bring a lifelike intensity to their gaze. The modeling is both graphic and expressive—simple in silhouette yet detailed enough to read as folk-influenced Americana. The owls are mounted on classic log rests, making them functional as well as decorative. Their taller-than-usual scale makes them a standout in period fireplaces, especially when paired with rustic or Arts and Crafts interiors. Whether used in their original context or styled creatively in a hearthless alcove or as sculptural accents, this pair brings both charm and a touch of the unexpected. The castings are marked “3000A” and “USA,” confirming American manufacture. A rare survival in this form and condition, these andirons will appeal to collectors of early 20th-century ironwork and lovers of animal-themed decorative arts.
