About the Item
A striking and superbly cast pair of Louis XVI period gilt bronze fireplace andirons (chenets), dating to circa 1780 and attributed to Parisian workshops of the highest caliber. These andirons exemplify the refinement and grandeur of late 18th-century French neoclassicism.
Each chenet is crowned with a boldly modeled flaming urn, adorned with garland swags and superbly detailed ram’s head masks—an iconic motif drawn from classical antiquity, symbolizing sacrifice and strength. The urns rest atop robust, fluted pedestals ringed with beaded and foliate ornamentation, raised on square bases with gadrooned edging.
The horizontal bar is finely decorated with crisp scrolling acanthus foliage and central rosettes in high relief, ending in upright posts capped by stylized pinecone finials—another neoclassical symbol of regeneration and eternity. The overall execution reflects the finesse of superior mercury gilding, with a rich, warm tone and precise chasing throughout.
These andirons were not merely functional hearth accessories but also expressions of aristocratic taste, likely commissioned for a grand Parisian hôtel particulier or chateau.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The gilding retains its deep luster with minor wear consistent with age. No restorations or replacements are visible; structurally and visually intact.
