Imposing gilt and sculpted bronze chenets. They are decorated with putti who are lying on their sides, one of which is playing with a bird. They are surrounded with foliage, scrollwork and flowers. Napoleon III period. Putti or cupids were often portrayed in the decorative arts, frequently as winged children. Their signification is varied, the most common one being the arousal of amorous desire. According to Philostratus the Elder, cupids are the children of nymphs that govern humankind (Imagines, Book 1.6). There are so many of them because mankind wants so many things.
