About the Item

A magnificent and rare antique French Empire neoclassical fire screen composed of gilt and patinated bronze. The structure follows a rectangular form with a sloping upper section and a recessed central panel. The main frame is set with a geometric openwork grille of patinated bronze, bordered by molded gilt bronze bands. The screen is supported by straight uprights forming a strong architectural outline, with slightly canted corners providing depth to the overall construction. The decorative scheme consists of gilt bronze mounts applied in a symmetrical arrangement. A central medallion on the front panel features the head of Medusa with winged helmet, flanked by stylized foliate clasps joined by crossed rods. Laurel branches are mounted across the frieze, while vertical sprays of acanthus leaves rise along the uprights, terminating in rosettes. Additional mounts include anthemia, rosettes, and ribbon-tied motifs placed at regular intervals to emphasize balance and order. The gilt bronze is worked with crisp detail and mounted against the contrasting patinated bronze ground. French Empire fire screens of this type were produced in the early 1800s, often with strict neoclassical ornament derived from Greco-Roman design. The use of patinated bronze with applied gilt bronze reliefs is characteristic of high-quality decorative metalwork from this period. The combination of pierced lattice construction with bold gilt mounts reflects both functional and ornamental concerns, as the screen served to shield interiors from the fireplace while also acting as an element of architectural decoration.
