About the Item

Circa 1920 Very Large Wrought Iron Double-Sided Hanging Sign — “Main Road Garage” An exceptional and impressively scaled circa 1900 wrought iron double-sided sign, this striking piece once advertised a local “Main Road Garage” during the early era of motoring. Measuring an imposing 88 in height and 66 in width, (150x220cm) it is a rare surviving example of turn-of-the-century commercial signage, crafted with the robust materials and handmade character typical of the period. The sign comprises a substantial wrought iron frame, hand-forged with traditional techniques, supporting a double-sided metal panel bearing bold block lettering. Its proportions and construction suggest it was originally mounted perpendicular to a large post, designed for maximum visibility to passing pedestrians, cyclists, and the earliest motor vehicles on Britain’s developing high streets. The surface shows authentic age and weathered patina consistent with more than a century of outdoor use, adding depth and visual character without compromising its structural integrity. The lettering remains strong and legible on both sides. With its monumental scale and powerful industrial presence, this sign functions today as a dramatic architectural statement—ideal for lofts, commercial interiors, hospitality spaces, galleries, or private automobilia collections. Its historical connection to the early motor trade gives it both decorative and narrative appeal. Rare, sculptural, and highly atmospheric, this is an outstanding example of original industrial signage with genuine early automotive heritage.

Italian Pirelli Wrought Iron Advertising Trade Sign 1920
Located in Hastings, GB
Absolutely incredible advertising sign for an Italian garage, blacksmith made in forged and ornate wrought Iron. This sign was removed from a garage in Turin, Italy where it had hung since 1920, advertising the variety of services the garage carried out, as well as Pirelli tyres. The sign is wonderfully weather beaten, with losses to the paint and sections of the advertising text. Overall the sign is in superb structural condition, with a couple of small fissures, which are barely noticeable. A truly exceptional piece of antique signage...
