19th Century Portuguese Blue and White Azulejo Port Scene Mural

About the Item

This beautiful blue and white panel consists of 80 individually hand-painted tiles from Portugal, and dates to the 1800s. Measuring nearly 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide, the scene depicted is that of a bustling port scene with ships, choppy waters, and dock hands unloading goods. Upon closer inspection, one can view interesting details of wooden ships of distinct construction, lettered bags and barrels, people, and architectural elements, including a large stone portico. 3 large wooden ships with various flags are anchored in the harbor, while dinghies full of sailors battle the difficult waters to bring cargo to the dock. The word “azulejo” literally means small square tile, and for centuries, the Portuguese royalty and spiritual leaders have decorated the inside and outside of their palaces, homes and churches with brilliantly colored antique Portuguese tile art. Starting in the 15th century Moorish inspired tiles were of geometric designs, colored in shades of yellows, greens, and blues. As the 17th century approached, azulejos became mostly all blue and white. This was a result of the Chinese porcelain dynasty and the Delft being produced in the Netherlands. A visit to Lisbon in the present day will reveal an amazing plethora of blue and white tiles decorating building facades, homes, interiors, etc. The tiles you see here, were produced sometime in the 1800s, and were later removed from their original installation. The tiles have been applied to a modern backing board, and a future owner could choose to embellish the art with a frame, but they can be certainly be displayed “as is” on any wall.
