About the Item

An exceptional marble capital of the classic Corinthian order with 3 tiers of foliate acanthus leaves. Both large and well preserved our beautiful example retains much of its crisp carving throughout with patches of age and weathering. The monumental size of the capital is truly captivating and lends itself well to use as a table, a stand, or simply an impressive piece of decorative art in it's own right. An architectural element of this magnitude and quality from the late Roman period would make an elegant addition to any home or collection. Notes The Corinthian order is the most ornate of the orders (as opposed to the earlier Doric and Ionic) boasting slender fluted columns topped by elaborate capitals with acanthus leaves and scrolled volutes like this example. The famous Roman architect Vitruvius observed that the lavish Corinthian design "was produced out of the two other orders." Vitruvius described the Corinthian column as "an imitation of the slenderness of a maiden; for the outlines and limbs of maidens, being slenderer on account of their tender years, admit of prettier effects in the way of adornment." Provenance Art Market, Europe, early 2000s. Art Market, New York, prior to December 5th, 2002. Private Collection New York, New York. Private Collection Los Angeles, California.
