Late 19th Century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 5cm x 17.5cm x 5cm
This intriguing antique door knocker is shaped as a hand holding a ball, a design often referred to as a ‘lady’s hand’ with a history spanning centuries, primarily intended to ward off evil.
The female-shaped hand door knocker, commonly holding a ball or fruit, emerged in Europe around the 17th century and gained popularity in Spain, reflecting influences from Muslim and Jewish cultures. In these traditions, the hand - sometimes called the ‘Hand of Fatima’ (daughter of the Prophet) in Islamic culture or the ‘Hand of Miriam’ (sister of Moses and Aaron) in Jewish culture - symbolises protection, blessing, and good fortune, while the ball or fruit represents abundance and prosperity. The five fingers are equally symbolic: the palm-shaped hand, or ‘khamsa’, has long been a sign of protection. In Arabic, ‘khamsa’ means ‘five’ and may reference both the human hand and the Five Pillars of Islam, or, in Jewish tradition, the Five Books of the Torah.
This example is crafted from cast iron, featuring a square backplate cast in high relief with a repeating decorative motif. From it emerges a slender female hand, the wrist adorned with a frilly sleeve, holding a ball that serves as the knocker. The arm is movable and, when installed, rests flat against the door. A long screw thread and nut at the back allow the piece to be securely fastened.
Imbued with historical significance and spiritual meaning, this fascinating Victorian door knocker is a superb addition to a collection of Victorian antiques or as a striking historic front door accessory.
