About the Item
An 18th-century staddle stone crafted from limestone and originating from England, this piece consists of two separate components: the base and the cap. When stacked together, they form a complete staddle stone. Traditionally, staddle stones served as sturdy supports for granaries, hayricks, game larders, and similar structures. By elevating these buildings above the ground, they allowed for air circulation to prevent rot, while the cap ensured that the building and its contents were out of reach for mice and other vermin.
While you may still find some staddle stones serving their original purpose in England—particularly in the Cotswolds, where most of our antique staddle stones originate—they are now primarily used as decorative garden elements. Notably, they are featured in prestigious gardens such as those of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at Highgrove. This historic piece can serve as a striking standalone sculptural element, adding timeless charm and character to your garden space.
