About the Item
This magnificent building facade was once part of a grand mansion in Gujarat, India. It is entirely made from Teakwood, which is highly resistant to insects and to water. Originally, it was the lower two floors a 4-storey wood facade supported by thick masonry walls. The woodwork had been painted over multiple times. After it was dismantled, the layers of paint were stripped off and the wood was scrubbed, leaving it with a natural appearance. The architectural style is a blend of native Indian and Islamic motifs known as Mughal. Mughal architecture is an unusually graceful hybrid style best known by the Taj Mahal. Muscular, simple vertical and horizontal members are overlaid with curvilinear patterns taken from nature. A custom-made steel armature supports the 60 wooden parts, which interlock.
During the apex of the British Raj in India and Burma, trade flourished, cities expanded and many great fortunes were made. Each fortune manifested itself in a mansion or palace. Today, many of these mansions still exist, some sprawling across several acres of grounds. In India's densely populated cities, old or obsolete low-rise structures are increasingly being replaced by high-rise towers with modern air-conditioning and other amenities. When old buildings are taken down they are not demolished; meticulously disassembled, the parts numbered and shipped all over the world. The doors and door frames are the most commonly found, internationally. This full facade (with two more upper floors available) is an extraordinary find. Detailed assembly instructions are included.
