Located in Dallas, TX
This cast iron fireback was produced in 1726 in the Franche-Comte region of France. The rectangular fireback has thick molding on all four sides, enclosing the raised elements seen in the middle of the fireback. “1726” can be seen at the top of the fireback, indicating that the fireback was created in 1726. Below the date is a baluster-shaped millrind, aligned in the same orientation as a saltire cross. Both elements are flanked by a pair of shaped columns festooned with gadrooning and foliate elements. They are topped by flaming finials and represent the Pillars of Hercules. The fireback can be used as originally intended, along the back wall of a fireplace to reflect heat back into the room. It can also be affixed to a wall and used as a stove backsplash...
