About the Item

Italian Carved and Polychrome Painted Wood Balustrade in Faux Marble Finish. This large architectural fragment features turned baluster supports beneath a molded top rail, all hand-painted in a beautifully aged polychrome finish that imitates veined marble. Hues of ochre, russet, and sage lend depth and authenticity to the faux-marble treatment, a decorative technique highly prized in neoclassical and provincial French interiors of the 19th century. Originally part of an interior stairway or balcony, the balustrade would have been both a structural and ornamental feature. This balustrade makes a dramatic decorative focal point in both traditional and contemporary spaces. It may serve as a console or room divider or be mounted as a freestanding element to add architectural texture and historical character. It also works beautifully as a backdrop for art or sculpture displays.
