About the Item

A sensational cast iron balcony railing removed from a villa near Avignon, France that dates to c. 1875. Please notice the enormous scale of this piece with its extraordinary width. The invention of cast iron (as distinct from forged iron, worked by hand by blacksmiths) made an astonishing debut at the Crystal Palace Exhibition Hall in London in 1851 where its ability to enclose large pieces of glass and soar to amazing heights impressed people from across the globe with its potential for new construction. The most famous cast iron structure in France is the Eiffel Tower. Please look at the handsome pattern of scrolls and flourishes designed to form a symmetrical theme across the entire facade of the structure it once graced. Decorative grillwork such as this piece was an integral part of French residential design and construction and enabled full length doors to be opened to the outside without fear of falling. The choice of ornamentation was highly individualized and served to complement the exterior architectural details. This particular example is notable for its trellis pattern done in a grand scale in order to enclose a variety of foliate designs including leaves, flowering blossoms and stylized fleur-de-lys. The two vertical supports on the left and right are circular iron cylinders affixed with a large ring at the half way point. The top of the grille has two horizontal iron supports that bolt into the wall to provide stability. Now this piece has been transformed into a stunning console table with the addition of a top made of Belgian bluestone The top has a thickness of two inches to complement the scale of the ironwork. Also notice the shallow depth of this console table that makes it perfect for any space that needs a narrow table to facilitate the flow of walking.
