About the Item

This is an old Japanese door. It is thought to date from the Edo or Meiji period. It was used as the door of a traditional warehouse called a "kura." In Japan, old storehouses are considered a symbol of wealth. Storehouses were used not only to store food, but also important books, treasures, and items passed down from generation to generation, but their numbers are decreasing due to aging. It is made of cedar, and has been exposed to the elements for a long time, naturally aging over time, giving it an uneven grain and a "Uzukuri". Uzukuri is a traditional Japanese processing technique that highlights the wood grain by scraping away the soft annual rings (spring and summer rings) to reveal the harder annual rings (winter rings). The surface of this door has been given a natural Uzukuri finish over many years. There are iron wheels attached to the bottom of the door, allowing it to move smoothly. Of course, you can use it as a door as is, but we also recommend using the doors originally used in Japanese storehouses "kura" as they are and hanging them on the wall as room partitions or decorations.
