Pair of Antique French Egyptian Pine Doors with Carved Bird Motifs

About the Item

These antique doors are made of carved pine, and were salvaged from a property in Egypt, likely close to Cairo. The lower panels show unique carvings of birds, while the upper sections are more architectural in nature. In the 19th century, France began to establish a new empire in Africa and Southeast Asia. Most of the French territories in Africa were in the Northwest part of the continent. Egypt was never a colony, although they were greatly influenced by the French. At the end of the 18th century, Napoleon began a military campaign that took him to Egypt. By the time he left in the early 1800s, Egyptian culture had been greatly affected by France. During the Belle Époque, which was the 30-40 year period prior to World War I, Egyptian missions were sent to France to acquire knowledge in the arts and sciences. When they returned to Egypt, they brought with them the influence of the French middle class. The culture of France could be seen throughout the entire city, especially downtown, where old photographs show a striking resemblance to parts of Paris. Both sides of the door frontages seen here are symmetrical in appearance, except for an unadorned mullion jamb that is on the inside of the left door. A triangular pediment that sits on a cornice can be seen at the top of each door. Two volute leaf corbels, known as consoles, are beneath the cornice. The small consoles flank the top of a long, shaped panel with thick cavetto molding, which surrounds an interior lozenge (diamond) that sits on a raised panel. The mid rail of each door is a thick cornice that separates the long, shaped panel from a bottom square panel. Once again, cavetto molding surrounds a raised panel, this time with a carving of a bird pecking a floral branch. Remnants of iron hinges can be seen near the top of the back of the doors, as well as a security bolt. The sides of the doors have visible mortise and tenon construction, which was the traditional method of joining door frames and panels. These doors will look great in any interior project that need smaller scale, light colored antique doors with character.

Antique condition with minor rubs and buildup. Slight age separations and nicks and losses to wood throughout. Old fill. Left door had a newer strip of wood added as a door jamb.
