About the Item

Pair of antique 20th century English wrought iron driveway gates. These substantially constructed blacksmith made gates have a significant decorative shield of St George’s cross, which appears on England’s flag. There is also a pedestrian gate at its centre, which can be opened. Their strong multipurpose and secure stature could have originally come from a yard or brewery. The slick black finish and decorative scrolls add more to its design, while combining well with its robustness. Victorian Wrought Iron Driveway Gates Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.

Good structural condition. These have been powder coated in recent times. The paint finish is reasonable with few scratches but a top coat may need to be added. Minor rust. There is a 50mm twist over the length of the righthand gate. No hinges.
