About the Item

A rare set of Mid-Century carved redwood doors by American company Forms and Surfaces. Produced in the 1970s, this is a large, architectural pair of double doors with an expressive carved surface. The doors are offered in their original, as-found state and include the header, door jamb, and threshold, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of American architectural design history. The bold, sculptural design attests to the company's focus on innovative and artistic applications of materials. The interior side of the doors is original redwood with a hand waxed finish, while parts of the door jamb have been painted to match the exterior. The doors are in original condition with visible wear consistent with their age and use. Some dry damage is visible at the base of the doors. While the original hinges and hardware are included, some parts and screws are missing, and new hardware is recommended. More to the Story Forms and Surfaces was founded in 1968 by architects G.K. and R.L. Forms in Santa Barbara, California. The company specialized in designing and manufacturing high-end architectural products for public spaces. They are particularly renowned for their innovative work with textured surfaces, carved doors, and unique materials like bonded bronze and redwood. Their designs were often sculptural and Brutalist-inspired, fitting into the era's focus on raw, honest materials.
