About the Item
17th century French Louis XV Period fireback with pillars and Fleurs de Lys. The Fleurs de Lys (lilies) were partially truncated after the French Revolution as Fleurs de Lys symbolized royalty and aristocracy throughout Europe. The pillars stand for the club of Hercules and symbolize strength and the unknown. The Monogram IHS stands for Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus the Savior of Humanity) or In Hoc Signo (In this sign will you win).
The fireback has a black / pewter patina and is made of cast iron. The condition is good, no cracks.
